Should I insure my laptop is perhaps a question that many laptop owners are concerned with.
There are three possible reasons why it may be sensible to answer the ’insure my laptop’ question with a ‘yes’.
A laptop can be a very expensive gadget. As a piece of hand luggage it may be more susceptible to damage than some other smaller gadgets typically carried around inside your pocket or handbag. You may be very careful with your laptop when travelling etc but others may not be and accidents can happen.
With their very distinctive carrying cases, a laptop in its bag may be very obvious to those who would like to have yours without necessarily paying for it. Thieves can obviously be very resourceful and are not known for their respect of other people’s property.
Although designed to withstand it, delicate electronic components may be more prone to malfunction or breakdown it they are being knocked or shaken about on a regular basis.
A typical laptop insurance policy may:
- provide cover for accidental damage, which may include damage from liquids as well, though normal wear and tear or malicious damage may be excluded;
- protect you financially if your laptop is stolen, including if the theft takes place while the laptop is unattended in a locked and secure vehicle or premises;
- effectively extend the warranty on your laptop by providing breakdown cover outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
As with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these to ensure you understand them.
You may also wish to take note of the services and additional features which may typically be available with laptop insurance.
These may include:
- a guarantee to replace your laptop within 48 hours of your claim being approved if repairs are not an option;
- cover which extends outside of the UK for those travelling on business or pleasure;
- up to 3 GB of data storage available and accessible online so you can make sure that you still have your critical data and photos etc even if your laptop is gone.
These could be very useful features to you if you are a regular laptop user. You may now be asking yourself a different question – where can I insure my laptop?
