Laptop insurance cover – some FAQs

Laptop insurance cover may be a powerful tool if things go wrong and it might be worth thinking a little more about it.

Here are some FAQs that may help – though please keep in mind that the details of cover and exclusions may vary by the laptop cover provider.

What sort of laptops does this insurance cover?

Cover is typically available for all forms of laptop computers.

Some devices such as the Apple iPad, may have their own specific policy.

What does it cover?

Typically laptop insurance cover provides financial and logistical help if you’ve suffered:

  • theft;
  • the destruction of your laptop in an accident;
  • its breakdown outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.

It’s worth taking note that typically loss isn’t covered – so make sure you don’t misplace it!

Is my BlackBerry classed as a laptop or mobile phone?

Typically, neither – at least in insurance terms.

A specific policy is typically available for that device as per the iPad mentioned above.

It’s worth mentioning that all these devices are typically covered by policies called gadget insurance. That also extends to things such as cameras, PDAs and iphones etc.

What does logistical cover mean?

If the worst happens to your laptop, then without laptop insurance cover you’re going to feel some financial pain.

However, even if the money is unimportant to you, you may also suffer problems in terms of just sorting everything out including going off to buy a new one. That’s not always convenient if you’re busy.

As with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure you understand them.

So, some policies will also typically provide:

  • a guaranteed 48-hour replacement of your laptop once your claim has been reviewed and approved;
  • insurance cover even if you’re outside of the UK;
  • an amount of data backup space for the protection of your key contact data etc (typically up to 3GB).

These things may all prove very useful in a crisis.

What is the excess?

The excess is a technique used by insurance companies to try and help keep their prices down.

It basically means that you’ll have to pay the first part of any claim up to a specified amount.

The actual amount will depend upon the policy.

What is unattended theft?

Some policies may typically demand that you do not leave your laptop unattended unless it is in a secure and locked environment including a motor vehicle.

Leaving your laptop unattended in a public place may risk invalidating your theft protection.

Is cover available on the internet?

Yes. Providers of laptop insurance cover can be found on the internet and cover can typically be taken out online.
