Given the price of a typical laptop, trying to find the cheapest laptop cover may be an almost instinctive approach.
Not all laptop insurance offers the same level of cover though and relying on price alone, without actually looking at what protection is actually being offered, may not give you the cover you expect.
You may be prepared to pay more for a policy than the cheapest laptop cover on offer because you may want the features it provides. It may still seem like a cheap deal to you.
What’s best and cheapest for you may not be best for someone else. Everyone is different.
So what might you typically be looking for in a laptop insurance policy?
Laptop cover is one of a number of products dedicated to gadget insurance. These policies cover the risks specific to gadgets like iPads, iPhones, cameras, etc which may be prone to:
- theft – including theft when left unattended;
- accidental damage, which may also be caused by liquids;
- breaking down outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
In addition to this protection, you may typically find that some laptop insurance may also offer:
- worldwide cover;
- a guaranteed 48-hour replacement following claim approval;
- up to 3GB of online backup storage for key information, photos, contact details etc.
As with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure you understand them. This may include conditions if your laptop is stolen such as:
- remembering to report the theft to the police within 24 hours of it happening;
- passing the crime number they allocate to the theft to your insurance provider;
- taking simple precautions to avoid your laptop being an easy target for thieves like not leaving it lying in the open in plain view if you are not there.
In a similar vein, damage to your laptop may have to be:
- accidental and not as a result of some modification you were trying to make to it;
- not due to normal wear and tear.
The cheapest laptop cover may be the one than most closely meets your needs. It may not though. The only way you can find out may be to ignore the price – at least until you’ve found out exactly what it provides for you.
