If you are on the lookout for laptop insurance, those banner cheap laptop insurance headlines may look attractive.
Some care may be needed though, because while the cover they are offering may be cheap and may well offer you the cover you are looking for – it may not.
People are different and laptop insurance policies are different too. What’s suitable for someone else may not be suitable for you. After all, a cheap laptop insurance policy that doesn’t meet your needs may not be of interest to you – no matter how cheap it is.
A typical laptop insurance policy may offer some of the following features:
- the theft, including theft if let unattended and locked away, of your laptop;
- cover for accidental damage including damage from liquids;
- breakdown cover if the malfunction happens outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period.
If the first instance, in the case of damage or breakdown the first steps of any claim may be to ascertain whether the laptop can be fixed. If it can’t or if it has been stolen, a replacement may be needed.

As with any insurance product, terms and conditions exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure you understand them. These may set out actions for which you are responsible and which may be crucial to the success of any claim you were to make. For example:
- if your laptop is stolen then the police must be informed typically within 24 hours of the theft taking place. Failure to do this may invalidate your claim;
- if you leave the laptop unattended then unless there are signs of forced entry to the vehicle or premises then the claim for theft may not be accepted;
- damage may only be considered grounds for a claim if it can be shown to be accidental. You damaging your laptop trying to make modifications or normal wear and tear are typically not covered.
